On 26 May, late evening, the Koshi River water levels were high due to incessant rainfall in the region over the past four days, causing overflow on the Koshi coffer dam.
The structural impact of the overflow is being assessed. The media reports of 50 households remains unconfirmed as of this morning. It is anticipated the tea houses located near the coffer dam may have been affected by the overflow. (NB. Media cameras have been focused on the breach point and East-West Highway for weeks waiting for something to occur, rectifying the need to verify all media reports on the impact of the dam / embankment breach overflows).
At about 2300hr last night, the DDRC issued a report to the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry for Water Resources on the incident of water overflow. The DDRC requested immediate technical support from India, with particular concern that overflow would have affected the structure of the dams, as they are constructed from sand (as opposed to more concrete materials). The DDRC is highly concerned about the overflow, with the onset of the monsoon season, in addition to the low pressure system in the Bay of Bengal, which will likely bring more rain to the Eastern Region for the next 3-4 days.
